    Frazz

You might not believe this for all my going on and on about sports, but I have such a self-destructive brain it’s amazing I’ve finished a single event, let alone placed in and even won a few. When the going gets tough the tough may get going, but when the going gets good my demons get going.

I don’t mind the demon that tells me, when things are going off the rails, that things are going off the rails. That’s not really demoning, that’s just reporting. But I really don’t get the demon that tells me I don’t have the suds to sustain a good thing. This would be the demon that shows up midway through the 500 freestyle and tells me that my nice, zippy first 200 was a fluke, and that backing off would be the prudent thing to do. It is, of course, not the prudent thing to back off. The prudent thing to tell your demon to shut the hell up, you’re busy racing.

That’s bad enough, but I have some determined and creative demons that sometimes go from there to, “well, maybe if you had a good excuse you can be done with all this.” When I was racing bikes, I’d find myself in very small breakaway packs, which is generally a very good thing. The whole point is to get ahead of the herd, and if you can throw in with a subset of fast, cooperative riders, that’s a great way to do it. Except it’s a painful way to do it. That breakaway probably didn’t form because everybody else in it was slower than you. So you find yourself sharing the lead but feeling like you’re hanging on for dear life. And, no joke, that one demon decides that a mechanical of some sort, say, a flat would be the honorable way out of a situation I really don’t want out of.

    CONTINUED:

Fortunately, that one demon is an idiot with idiotic plans, and has schemed many times that if I could just reach between the spokes on my front wheel over and over at lightning speed and let the air out of my front tire, my problems would be solved. That’s the bike equivalent of sneaking onto a bus you don’t ride so you can leave your homework on the bus instead of just finishing your homework. Which is so illogical it never gets put into action, other than to get switched around for use in a comic strip. So it’s not all bad. Take THAT, demon.
