The North Koreans “won” this stupid exchange of schoolyard insults. They want to take China’s path to global acceptance and respectability. First, nuclear weapons to prevent the US from invading. Then, over time, talks will begin with various countries. Then some US president will have their “Nixon went to China” moment. Another 15-20 years, and N. Korea is way less isolated. Then, in their fevered dream, they end up dominating the south.
It won’t happen that way, of course, but that’s the N. Korean plan and they have executed that plan well. The current exchange with our mentally ill president has lent credence and legitimacy to their efforts, essentially establishing the US and N. Korea as peers in some weird fashion. Even absent the wild nuclear rhetoric from our mentally ill president, this is stupid foreign policy.
