Brilliant message here! Newsflash: the confederates lost. Time to tear down their monuments long ago. They only serve to embolden those who believe in racism and white supremacy in 2017. The time to act is now to fix this problem which should have gone away long ago. Yes, the civil war was fought over slavery. States wanted to assert their “right” to own people. It is over. The labels of republicans and democrats from now compared to the civil war era are irrelevant. Abe Lincoln would be a Democrat in 2017.
Masterkrain: Technically, the attack on Fort Sumter was not an invasion. No army crossed a state line. The reason Virginia gave for joining the rebellion was that the Federal Government wanted to send troops south to suppress the rebellion. The Virginians thought their rights as a state overruled those of the Federal Government, and that marching Federal troops through Virginia was an “invasion” from Yankeeland.
Notice the Eisenhower was able to use the National Guard, which was more or less a state-level military unit, to enforce desegregation. A smart move. No “invasion.”
The democratic candidate for the 1860 election regarded the leaders of the South as traitors, and promised his support to Lincoln. Unfortunately he died before being able to do much. So the Southern Democrats were a split from the main Democratic party from 1860 until they joined the Republican party in the 1960s.
The best part of the redesigned monument is it functions as a bathroom. Feel free to piss all over the Confederacy – we don’t need that kind of nonsense tearing us apart anymore than we need our current day nonsense.

@robert allen: Phase out Jackson from the $20 and put on Sequoyah. I mean, the guy created a written language for the Cherokee that was actually used.

Too bad, at least for the horse part. It was a pretty good horse. The guys, not so much.

A mad scientist/alchemist/wizard (take your pick) developed an animation potion.
He went to the park and tried it on the statue of some infamous — yet forgotten —Confederate general.
As he watched in wonder and delight, the statue began to move.
“I did it! I did it! I’ve created life!”
Turning to the animated piece of marble, he asked, “What are you going to do now?”
The stone general pulled two pistols from his belt and looked up. “Fust, Ah’m a gonna kill me ’bout a million pigeons.”
