Only problem; more cars than people and not enough roads in good condition to drive them on and then they’re gonna have to start taxing the renewable sources to make the fossil fuels competitive.
Oregon is trying a “pilot” program to charge by miles driven, with a monitor on your car and driving, rather than taxing gasoline a penny or two more. This is completely the opposite of what is required to encourage conservation, and alternate “fuels” vehicles. A stupid and invasive proposal. Can’t figure why Oregon is doing this. Burn more gas, AND have your privacy invaded by government? Kinda’ the opposite of what folks would associate with Oregon.
The more economical a vehicles gasoline usage becomes, the less revenue it brings in. Add in hybrids, fuel-cell, and electric vehicles which use hardly any or no gas and you have a problem, ecpecially with the math-challenged folks we’ve sent to state offices in this country.
A percent proportional to the revenue required for road repair (and wherever else its diverted) , the median miles driven, the median price of gasoline, and the number of vehicles using gas, would make a lot more sense than a fixed number that has to be changed every few years to avoid deficits. As the size of the state and local governments get bigger and bigger things get less and less efficient.

I love riding in wind-powered boats, especially when I’m not the one driving.

Payne really should rewrite his GoComics bio — current one states he’s “an informed journalist.” Mis-informed would be much more accurate!

Must you? Now we will have to wade through reams of idiots claiming that we have to fight for our gas hogs.
