Sorta like how FDR knew we were going to have to fight against the Nazis, but about 40 percent of the country didn’t want to get involved. So he had a private position and public position. And he worked to lead them around.

See Democrats get held to a higher standard. They’re considered hypocritical if they are mean, ignorant, exploitive, spiteful, racist authoritarian con-artists (looking at you Paul Ryan and Ted Cruz) who only want their way or will blow up the nation. In the GOP, that behavior is encouraged and thus they can never be called hypocrites.

Publicly, Newt Gingrich was impeaching Bill Clinton for having an affair. Privately, Newt Gingrich (and pretty much the entire GOP congressional leadership) were having affairs of their own.

A few years ago, leading American historians got together and announced they had determined only three US presidents definitely had not had sex outside of marriage, they did not give numbers for uncertains. The three were John Adams, Harry Truman, and Jimmy Carter. I think they can add Obama now. That is one Federalist and two (three) Democrats. No Republicans. So much for family values.
