I’m tempted to hop into the commentary on the Post. I love how he defends family values for EVERYBODY. Guess what Righties, we CAN raise children despite you equating our children to dogs (courtesy Mike Huckabee).
Here’s my Monday rant – it’s a continuation of my critique of the right.
I have argued in previous posts (on Asay) that the right made no important contribution to the civil rights movement, which I believe was the most important moral/legal challenge of my lifetime in the US. All of the important contributions came from the left. I have heard no counter-argument, so I will take it that we are all agreed on that point.
Moving on, I would argue that the right made no important contribution to a second important moral/legal issue, that is, Equal Rights for Women. I take this to be a very important issue, because of my fundamental principle that people should have the opportunity to choose their own lives. Women should have opportunities equal to those of men, and this point implies equal access and equal compensation.
Women in my mother’s generation (born around 1920) clearly did not have equal opportunities. The situation has improved greatly, and once again the right made no important contribution to this improvement.
This improvement was partly legal, but also partly a change in attitudes. Once again I would argue that a complete analysis of power in society does not stop with government and law, but must include other social forces as well.
Another extremely important point here is the issue of violence against women. Of course violence against anybody is bad, but it seems clear that society used to (still does?) accept some forms of violence against women, including especially domestic violence. Again, changes have been (must be) both legal and attitudinal.
So once again on a very important issue of my lifetime in the US, the right made no important contributions. I await counter-arguments.
^ Not from me. Apparently Glenn Beck has decided the Civil Rights movement was not, in fact, a radical left-wing effort but some form of libertarian, pro-capitalism effort. Oy.
^You’re only encouraging them to listen to Beck more. Remember, the right was responsible for everything good that happened to this country while the liberals were responsible for bad things like homosexuality.
Don’t worry…We’ve all heard of the positive contributions of “the Left” before…They tell us about it all the time!
Also there is Kook-Libs, Marxists, Leftists, Democrats, Moderates, Republicans, Conservatives, and very, very few Kook-Rightys. (Libertarians on both side of the spectrum).
I would say most of the posters here and most of Obama’s Regime are made up of Kook-Libs, marxists, and Socialist-Oligarchs : all of which are responsible for nothing positive and very much negative, Thank you.
“We knew Jack Kennedy; and you kooks are not Jack Kennedy.”
Why isn’t anyone talking about the forced 3.5% cost to be added to all home sales, starting next year? Or, how the Fed in its “infinite” wisdom has decided that no home loan will be assumable? Think the housing market is in the porcelain convenience now, just wait…..
Errr…if you’re going to be truly complete, you should include Randites, fascists, conspiracy righties, gun nuts, religious fanatics and, yes, definitely Kook Righties, who seem to include a disproportionate percentage of the posters here!
