    I’m having trouble reading the boxes, but assume they contain macaroni made from weird things like, well ponies, for example….

    It didn’t taste very good, but their macaroni and cheese was lighter.

    Someone made a bad mistake; it looks like The Argyle Sweater shrank in the wash. Since it’s 50% wool, it should be dry cleaned or washed with Semi-Woolite.

    As to the cartoon, my guess is that based on the Yankee Doodle Pasta Co. being the manufacturer, someone stuck a feather in the box and called it macaroni, which is pretty clever.

    In England 300 year dressing with too much lace and embroidery and jewelry would get you compared to a “macaroni merchant”, a French or Italian salesman. The expression eventually got shortened to just being a “macaroni”. It was around this period that there were actually laws passed against men wearing lace and ruffles and such. So putting a feather in your cap could be called “macaroni”.

    I even saved the picture but text is too blurry to read (too few pixels). It looks, though, as if it was expanded from just feathers to calling many other things “macaroni”. I like scottwell’s explanation, though.

    As the Firesign Theatre once wrote:

    “Yankee Doodle came to terms, Writing Martin Buber, Stuck a führer in our back And called it Schicklgruber”.

    Have any of you tried to click on the cartoon to enlarge it? Makes it a lot easier to read.

    @Takiniteasy

    Peter, David, and Phil are very much alive. Phil, however, was tragically killed by a wildly honking madman with a pickle, but he was luckily returned to life during one of Phil’s frequent flashbacks to the 70’s. They have all been gone for a thousand years, but recently returned to showbiz with their heads still aching from the bottle of champagne.

    They’ve also made a website.

    @ tsandl & @takiniteasy,

    A few years back they did a live tour, and it was great! Almost everyone in the audience started saying the lines to the more famous bits along with the guys. They kept cracking up about it. After a while, they started using it, holding their hands out to the audience right before a famous line (like “And how do I make my voice DO this?) and letting us say it. They’re very good with the improv stuff.

    Did everyone notice how sottwell had background information about the comic? Do you think we should all start castigating him[?] for stating the obvious and making boring posts? Could he be someone we won’t want to share GoComics with? Maybe we can get him banned!

    [Sorry, sottwell, it was a good post you made – very informative. You just got in the crosshairs!]

    Charlie, as a comics expert let me explain it to you.

    The ridiculousness of having a feather in a box that’s supposed to be for macaroni is mirrored further by having different pastas with absurd contents. In other words, there basic business plan for calling things pasta while filling the boxes with contents that are most certainly not pasta is what makes this work.
