@Baslim has it. The game was formally known as “Colossal Cave Adventure” and was installed on pretty much every mainframe. There were two mazes, one where each room had a slightly different description (“little twisty passages” “twisty little passages,” etc.) and one where every room had the same description.
You got through them by mapping them once and writing it down (E, E, W, N, S, S, or something similar). One of the mazes had a battery for your lantern in it.
