I can only interpret this in one way that isn’t insulting to a deist - Norman thought paying money was a substitute for being righteous. And in his time of need he didn’t ask for help, but expected it to come naturally.

But whether the point is that God doesn’t care, or is merely concerned with money, (or both), it’s very insulting.
