in regards to the strip from Sat., 2/20/10,Capt.Kangaroo was in reality just a Sgt.He was a Gunnery Sgt in the Marine Corps, highly decorated for service in WW II, a survivor of the Iwo Jima battle and according to actor Lee Marvin, also a Marine, who served with Kangaroo, was the bravest man Marvin had ever known. His real name was Bob Keeshan and he was responsible for saving many lives on Iwo. A little respect please.

His name was Bob Keeshan; also the first Clarabelle on Howdy Doody.

Just an ordinary Hero to kids and grownups. I’ll always remember him..

He was also know as “Mister Mayor”.

Rover’s face in the first two panels would make a glacier melt.

I don’t get the last panel.

Bob Keeshan was a friend of my father from WWII. He did all those amazingly heroic things and never lost the little kid inside. He was a great man and I was honored to know him. I wish all of you could have known him, too. He used to poke fun at his public image when he was around and always entertained the neighborhood kids, tirelessly. Respect him or not. Your choice…. but he was a good guy, one of the best I’ve ever met.

And since we are on this note, today is the anniversary of the raising of the flag on Iwo JIma in 1945.
