   How on earth do you know what I was “called” to be? If I had pursued being a folk singer, it would not have been “in some pub”.

   I have sung, by invitation, at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on the Lake Geneva shoreline (the second largest annual jazz festival in the world) to a capacity crowd. I was also invited to sing and play guitar on the stage of the Westgate International Theater in Las Vegas, again to a capacity crowd. Singing and playing guitar to a large audience always created joy for me.

   Most doctors are burned out, overworked, or exhausted. Many doctors function in survival mode. Doctors are not supposed to make mistakes. Caring for sick people can make you sick. Some medical students believe they graduate with PTSD. Seeing too much pain and not enough joy is unhealthy. Some doctors feel like indentured slaves. Many doctors are in denial about the high rate of physician suicide. Physicians are often bullied by insurance companies, employers, and patients. Doctors are often socially isolated. Doctors can’t just be people. They’re doctors 24/7. Doctors can feel trapped. Some see no alternatives to their suffering.

   If you are “disappointed”, I can’t help it. I am responding with the truth, and not trying to “offer something wise” to you. Being a physician is one of the most difficult things that anyone can do, but we are not supposed to make any complaints about it. Doctors across the world work in stressful conditions, often making life or death decisions under considerable pressure. With changes in patient and societal expectations, these pressures continue to rise.

   Yes—call 911. I certainly hope this “fellow student” is NOT her new love interest. She has tried to tutor him in the past, and he wasn’t promising in any way.

   Use your creativity. Make your own card. I have boxes and boxes of cards my artist husband has made for me over the years. They’re much better than the “store bought” kind.
