I would say that, for starters, if someone’s first contribution to a conversation that’s already well under way is to complain that no one’s brought yet up something he or she is interested in discussing, then that person should not be consider an involved party for these purposes.

There appears to be a comment missing (@Croc’s second comment appears to be a reply to a deleted comment, which you also appear to be referring to), so I may have missed something. However, what I saw when I first posted is that you posted an hour after @Croc’s second comment and @old_geek posted an hour later than you. I’d hardly say any conversation was “well under way” with only two people and three comments.

I suppose it’s possible that more than one post was deleted, but maybe you can tell me what was there.

Imagine you and a friend are at a restaurant or something, and a stranger sits at your table and demands to know what you thought of some movie you haven’t seen.

Obviously that would be rude, but that’s not close to analogous. My dinner table is a private event in a semi-public space. GoComics comment sections are very public spaces (you don’t even need to be a member to read them). (Yes, it’s a private business, but any member of the public can get an account and post.)

But are you master of your domain?

Of course - except when I’m not. :)

Your “freedom” sounds more like personal censorship of others to make you happy.

No, it was a polite request. I have absolutely no power to censor anybody here (nor do you).

And it’s not about making me happy. It’s about avoiding turning the comments in a completely non-political comic into a cesspool of division, name calling, and partisan garbage. Political comments often do that. It’s one thing when the comic is political, in which case political comments are inevitable, and another when the comic isn’t political in the slightest.

It’s also about following the Comment Policy. The very first sentence says, “We welcome thoughtful, respectful comments that stay on topic.” Your comment was not respectful or on topic.

It also says that comments containing some things aren’t permitted, including those that:

“(1) are sexual in nature, indecent, obscene, threatening, defamatory, inflammatory, abusive, harassing, violent, offensive, or otherwise objectionable”

    Your comment was inflammatory.

“(2) contain profanity or expressions of hatred, bigotry, racism, bullying or name calling”

Your comment engaged in name calling, specifically “tRumpublican”.

    That’s three strikes.

I can only go on what is written, I guess I’m not psychic enough to divine intent.

Google what I originally wrote - “Lighten up, Francis”. That’s what was written. No special divination skills are required, just the ability to copy and paste the entire sentence. ;)

As noted, I did that and a video clip from “Stripes” was the first result. I’d post the URL but my VPN won’t allow playing YouTube clips. I can post the search, though, which does show the clip first.

If you’ve never seen “Stripes”, check it out. It’s pretty funny.

Here is a thought, it mirrors what my dear old saintly grandmother taught me. If you don’t like what’s on the channel, don’t watch the channel, ie: if you don’t like some of the comments, don’t read the comments. Simple solution.

It’s even simpler to not post divisive comments. It would take literally no effort on your part.

And your “simple solution” isn’t that simple — it’s not possible to know if you like a comment without reading it. If you mean don’t read any comments, I’m not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater by not reading the comments at all. Many people make funny or educational comments without feeling the need to make uncalled for political comments, and I enjoy reading those.

Finally, if you feel you have the freedom to post nonsense, I also have the same freedom to let you know what I think.

Because it is the right wingers claiming the term (among others) is being “banned”. Not the left.

    That leads to more questions.

    First, is Rat a “business”?

Second, is it “banned”? If so, by which side? (Of course, we all know that words can’t be literally “banned”. Even some of the worst, like “the N word”, are still used — as in “Django Unchained”.)

Finally, if one side “bans” it, isn’t it allowed for the “other side” to point out the banning?

I pointed out that blunebottles answer didn’t answer preachermans question [….]

But it did answer the question; “First comment” was just ambiguous. You took it to mean the first comment in this thread (what I call the “top-level comment”). However, the first comment in the comic did mention OCD; you just had to click Show All Comments to see that.

For those that don’t know, GoComics always shows comments in chronological order (earliest first). It also shows replies the same way. However, GC defaults to only showing the Featured Comment when you first read the comic. It chooses the Featured Comment by which top-level comment has the most replies; if no comment has any replies, it shows the last comment made as the Featured Comment (which seems odd). In the case where two comments have the same number of replies, I’m not sure which becomes the Featured Comment (I think the earliest, but I could be wrong).

DISCLAIMER: That’s how it works on my browser on my laptop. It’s possible it could work differently elsewhere, but I find that unlikely.

    1) I’m not sure who this “Francis” is that you’re referring to.

You criticized somebody for not Googling, so I’ll ask if you tried it? In Google, the first result shows the scene from “Stripes” I’m referring to.

    2) When someone comes back with a personal attack of they’re sorry another is too stupid to use the Show all Comment button (or to use the internet they way THEY do) to compensate for the first persons failure to effectively communicate they can’t (or shouldn’t) be offended by a reply. Of course it’s now normal to play the victim with “they hit me back first”

The “person” came back and said, “The person who wrote the comment above mine one wrote something related to the strip with “OCD” in it. I was too lazy write two posts. Everybody else seemed to get that and didn’t mind. So I wonder why you are fretting so much. There is no harm done in asking and answering.”

There was no “personal attack” there unless you consider saying “Everybody else seemed to get that and didn’t mind. So I wonder why you are fretting so much.” an “attack”.

    3) It’s presumptious and condescending to feel that a person has the right to speak for everyone else and criticize another for the assumption that another person doesn’t feel the way “Everybody else” does, or to assume how another person is feeling.

I generally agree. However, I believe the intent of “everybody” was “everybody who responded until now”, not “everybody in the Universe”.

My general rule is, when something can be taken positively or negatively, give person the benefit of the doubt — unless they’ve established that they don’t deserve it. (For example, a person with a history of sexist remarks may not get the benefit of the doubt when making a comment that may or may not be sexist.)
