   A good friend of mine is Jewish, he married a devout Catholic. After the ceremony but before the signing of the docs he joked to her that by their beliefs she was legally married-having had it been so blessed by a priest BUT he felt he wasn’t since the legal documents hadn’t been signed. Despite this dubious start they are still together decades later.

   beat me to it on the sherlockian reference. for those who don’t know i, in a particular case sherlock ends up as a witness to the wedding of the suspect he is following. in disguise he’s grabbed as ’you’ll do’ and was paid for the work-he laughingly later told watson he intended to have the coin turned into a watch fob as a reminder of the event.

Episcopalian/anglican/church of england is very much into the ceremony as Rome but the differences are less doctrinal than political. For example in he 1990’s when the CoE started ordaining women, the pope in rome declared it was a block to reunification with Rome and failed to see his intransigence or the matter might be the block. It is also the church with a sense of humor. They appointed Desmond Tutu the head of the church in south Africa while apartheid was still in place.
