    German, like English, is Germanic. “Arrive” comes from French, a Romance language. The weak-strong verb bit is largely Germanic, while most inflected languages have irregular verbs.

    Curiously, Hebrew (and some other Semitic languages) have a weak vs strong distinction, but it is the opposite of the Germanic one. In Germanic languages, the weak verbs obey they rules, while the strong ones (through ablaut) partly break free from them. In Hebrew, strong verbs keep the rules, while weak ones (those with consonants that assimilate easily) can’t keep the rules. I’m not going to draw some overblown, “cosmic” conclusion about the deep symbolism here; I just find it interesting.
