Also, consider the time frame: 1962.

All I can say is that was the time frame of my experience. My memory COULD be defective or selective.

I have a story about this: When I was a kid (1962) we visited Yellowstone National Park. The Park Rangers told us a story of visitors from (West) Germany who came seeking mushrooms because they were familiar with and ate mushrooms while in Europe. The Park Rangers cautioned them that many(most?) mushrooms here are poisonous and they replied that they had studied them in Europe and knew just which ones to eat. They had to be rushed to a Hospital for treatment. They could not get it through their heads that US mushrooms were completely different from similar ones found there.

Does NOT have the same flavor. US Truckers typically spend FAR more time on the road between stops, but even more so, the Australian Outback truckers! Many/most over-the-road truckers have sleeper cabs. I did not see many (any?) in Europe when I was in Germany (Cold War).

You may have: Mark has become more attentive to the copyright dates lately.

It is a throwback to the time when MDs wore them, say the 1930’s and appeared in SciFi flicks like 1931’s Frankenstein. Similarly, the Black gloves hearken back to a time when Latex surgical gloves were that style and likewise appeared in the movie. Also relevant is the fact that they were popular with Pathologists, and may well still be for those really messy dissections.

In any case, it is all about (A)Money, and (B) The perception of the “environment” twisted to extract more money from the peasants. I use plastic but I get double use out of it because I save them for Cat Box cleaning time.
