FWIW, most countries (e.g., European, and Canada) have just a red and white striped pole. America added the blue (also used sometimes in Australia and Japan). I’ve read the blue is really more about the colour of veins, and possibly bruising. I suspect blue was used on poles in America even before they ‘discovered’ hemoglobin. No way of knowing, but I think that’s the point. Each is wearing a button saying what the other’s party usually (seems?) to abide by. So, common ground, but also uncommon.
