It used to be that there was a reasonable and rational conservative position, which included the ideas that (a) the government shouldn’t go intio debt, (b) tax policy should not be used to redistribute wealth. I don’t agree with these positions, but they are not crazy, and they deserve debate. But conservatives seem to believe that (a) they should add 1.5 trillion dollars to the debt, and (b) tax policy should redistribute wealth from the poor and middle class to the wealthy. In addition, they are using the added debt to attack fundamental parts of the social safety net, thus putting the poor and middle class even more at a disadvantage. Is this what conservative means today? I guess so. But old fashioned conservatives would be horrified by this tax bill.
