Sorry.. had Hawkins been born in the U.S… it is doubtful his genius would have survived his childhood. His doctors.. gave him less than 2 years… American doctors would not have given him even those 2.. unless there was a massive insurance policy they could tap into.
Hawking was diagnosed back in the 60s. He was not then by any means wealthy. He was a graduate student, and after finishing his dissertation, received a special fellowship to remain at Cambridge. It certainly would not have made him rich. His first book, written with George Ellis, was The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time never made the best-seller lists in 1973. I didn’t buy a copy until 1977.
A Brief History of Time did not come out until 1988. The wealth alluded to by gator did not come until after that. He was Lucasian Professor at Cambridge from 1979 until he retired. That no doubt was a comfortable salary, but not something which made him rich.
In fact, Hawking wrote ABHoT because he knew that his declining physical condition would bring expenses far beyond what his salary could meet. But more than 25 years elapsed between diagnosis and large income. Certainly in the early years, Hawking would have needed NHS. Small wonder that he might appreciate it later.

We fortunate to have him looking for answers to how we came into existence and his being able to share his insights.

A good example of universal health care.. without which his contributions would never have seen the light of day.

Stephen Hawking taught us that life is not about where you’re going to, it’s about what you did while you were alive.

You know, I don’t really like to go all ad hominem here, but Gator is, in my humble opinion, an arrogant tool. And that’s the cleaned up version.
