is a great piece of music, but the ballet is just laughable.

It is said that when it premiered, there were riots in the theater. I think that may have been exaggerated, but it was considered a laughingstock at the time.

As a child, I was a big fan of it (thanks to Disney’s Fantasia), but I had never seen the ballet. When I finally saw a performance of the original choreography, I completely understood the reaction of that original audience.

Janis hips will knock them dead! Literally!!!

But Janis – how else can you guarantee a successful growing and hunting season, if you don’t sacrifice a maiden at the start of spring? Everybody knows that’s necessary. Don’t flaunt thousands of years of conventional wisdom!
