Len’s not wrong though—writing a book is most definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme for most writers. Only a rare few actually make it big. If she’s going to do it just for the money, then yes, as someone who write himself, I would advise her to reassess her priorities. But if she’s doing it becuse she wants to write a book she thinks some people might get something out of, regardless of how successful it might be, then go ahead.
I’d advise her to get a literary agent once she’s got her draft finished though—an agent will help “shop” it around to the publishers most likely to want to publish it, narrowing greatly the publishers that “never read it” that Len speaks of.
