I suspect sitting can be a bit more challenging for guys. An “Excuse me, may I sit here?” is (not surprisingly) effective, unless you believe strange men are monsters, and then why would you want to sit beside them anyway? ;-)
My body’s a mess of injuries that never healed right, and so sitting in any one position for too long is physically painful. I simply need a bit of extra space so that I can shift about.
